INDIAN RECIPE: Rasam


Rasam is a South Indian soup.

Preparation time : 20 minutes
Cooking time : 15 minutes
Serves 4

Ingredients for Rasam:

  • ½ cup lentils (toovar daal), washed
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 5 red chillies, whole
  • 10 curry leaves
  • 1 gm asafetida
  • 2 tbsp garlic, crushed
  • A pinch of turmeric powder
  • 2-3 tomatoes, quartered
  • 2-4 peppercorns
  • 1 green chilli, deseeded and slit
  • ½ cup tamarind pulp

Directions for making Rasam:

  1. Heat oil in a pan. Saute mustard seeds till they crackle. Add whole red chillies, curry leaves, asafetida and garlic, stir for a few second. Add turmeric, lentils, tomatoes, peppercorns, green chilli, tamarind pulp and salt to taste. Stir in 1 litre of water.
  2. Bring to a boil and let it simmer until the lentils are mashed.
  3. Serve hot as a starter or as an accompaniment to a meal.
